Brussels, October 6, 2022. The Commission has approved a new Spanish Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), “Vaca Gallega – Buey Gallego” for beef from the breeds Rubia Gallega, Morenas Gallegas (Cachena, Caldelana, Frieiresa, Limiana and Vianesa), Asturiana de los Valles, Limusina, Rubia de Aquitania, Frisona and Pardo Alpina, either purebred or crossbred, raised in the territory of Galicia.
The forms of meat production in Galicia revolve around a mixed system, where grazing alternates with stall feeding. They take advantage of their own food resources and harvest surpluses, resulting in marbled meats that stand out for their characteristics and sensory quality.

The value of this meat
The meat of “Vaca Gallega – Buey Gallego” is tender and is characterized by a juiciness in the mouth and a deep and persistent meaty flavor and a slightly acidic aftertaste. Cattle breeding in Galicia dates back to prehistoric times. Livestock activity is still sustained on the basis of small family farms, where the cattle-land-human symbiosis is respected and a commitment is made to the feeding and careful handling of the cattle passed down from generation to generation.
This new designation will be added to the list of 1,596 agricultural products already protected. The list of all protected geographical indications can be found in the eAmbrosia database.
