Laura García, Europa Press delegate in Brussels, María Carou, RNE Brussels correspondent, and Almudena Ariza, international and war correspondent for TVE, were the winners of the XXIX Salvador de Madariaga European Journalism Award.
Press, Radio and TV categories: the jury’s deliberations
In the category of written press, Laura García was awarded the prize “for the rigor, accuracy, independence and sensitivity with which she reports from the Delegation in Brussels on European affairs, aware that the decisions of the European Union have an immediate impact on the lives of citizens”.
In the radio category, the jury highlighted María Carou’s ability to “transmit easily, understandably and didactically complex European information. Her quick understanding of the impact that European policies have on our country, and the direct and pedagogical language she uses in her chronicles contributes to getting listeners hooked on the information that reaches us from Brussels.”

During its deliberations, the jury decided to award the prize in the television category to Almudena Ariza for “her ability to transmit rigorous information from the most critical scenarios, combining the keys that allow contextualizing the situation and, at the same time, highlighting the faces, names and surnames of those affected. He has done so recently in the war in Ukraine and for many years in the coverage of some of the events of greatest impact in Asia, Europe or America”.
The Jury
The deliberations of the jury of the XXIX edition of the Award were held at the headquarters of the European Journalists Association on March 10, 2022, under the chairmanship of Isabel Garcia Tejerina, former Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment. The jury was composed by Diego Carcedo, president of the Association of European Journalists; by the winners of the last edition of the award, Marta Carazo, correspondent of TVE in Brussels, Catalina Guerrero, correspondent in Brussels of the EFE Agency and Julián Cabrera, director of the News Services of Onda Cero and by Montserrat Domínguez, director of Contents of Cadena SER; Javier García Vila, director of Europa Press; Rafael Latorre, director of “La Brújula” Onda Cero; Gemma Robles, director of El Periódico de España; Iñigo Domínguez, journalist of El PAIS; Ignacio Escolar, director of eldiario. es; Aurora Nacarino Brabo, columnist for El Confidencial; Alfonso Rodríguez Aldeyturriaga, director of COLPISA; Diego Garrocho, ABC opinion editor; Alejandra Clements, editor-in-chief of LA RAZÓN politics; Victoria Carvajal, columnist for The Objetive; Ana Pardo de Vera, director of Institutional Relations of PÚBLICO; Alberto Prieto, deputy director of El Español; Rosalía Santaolalla, president of the Asociación de Periodistas de Burgos; Carlos Franganillo, presenter of TVE’s Informativo 2 and Alberto Fernández, director of vozpopuli TV. Miguel Ángel Aguilar, secretary general of the Association of European Journalists, acted as secretary without vote.
The Salvador de Madariaga European Journalism Award
The prize, consisting of a diploma and an endowment of 15,000 euros in each category (written press, radio and television) is awarded annually by the Association of European Journalists, the Representation in Spain of the European Commission and the Madrid Office of the European Parliament. It rewards the work of media professionals whose work allows to form a public opinion about the European Union contrasted and under solid information bases.
The award ceremony will be held in Burgos on June 12 in Burgos.
