From 14-16 February 2024, Cohesion and Reforms Commissioner Elisa Ferreira will visit the regions of Castilla y León and Asturias to see how cohesion policy is implemented in these regions, and in particular how the Just Transition Fund (FTJ) supports the transition to a climate neutral economy.
Commissioner Ferreira met with the President of Castilla y León in Valladolid. She will then visit the Santa Bárbara Foundation in Folgoso de la Ribera (León). The Foundation offers training to workers in the mining and energy sector so that they can find employment in other sectors. She will also meet with representatives of the Working Table for Just Transition of Castilla y León and the trade unions involved in the negotiations of the Territorial Plan for Just Transition for León and Palencia.
The Commissioner will then take the train from León to Oviedo on the high-speed railway line “Variante de Pajares”, built thanks to the investment of more than 518 million euros of cohesion policy funds.
On Friday, the Commissioner will meet with the President of the Principality of Asturias and the regional Minister for Ecological Transition, Industry and Economic Development. A press briefing is planned after the meeting in Oviedo. He will also meet with representatives of Asturian civil society related to the Just Transition Observatory of Asturias (a body set up to assess the transition).
The trip will end with a visit to Windar Renovables’ production centre in Avilés (Asturias), which produces wind components sold and used worldwide.
For the 2021-2027 programming period, Spain received almost EUR 869 million from the FTJ to help the country move towards a climate-neutral economy. Asturias is the main beneficiary region of the FTJ in Spain, with a total allocation of €262 million.
