A total of 107 transport infrastructure projects will receive funding worth EUR 6.2 billion in EU grants from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), the EU’s instrument for strategic investment in transport infrastructure. Of these, 11 projects are Spanish.
More than 80% of the funding will support projects that provide a more efficient, environmentally friendly and intelligent network of railroads, inland waterways and maritime routes along the trans-European transport network (TEN-T). In addition, the projects will reinforce the EU-Ukraine solidarity corridors, created to facilitate exports to and imports from Ukraine.
Some examples of selected Spanish projects
Among the 107 projects selected, six are Spanish and in five of them Spain will collaborate with other member states. In the field of rail transport, the projects selected include the construction of the track platform for a high-speed railway line on the “Atxondo-Abadiño” section and the implementation of standard gauge on the railway section between Castellón and Vandellós as part of the Mediterranean Corridor. Regarding inland waterways, the modernization project of the Maritime Terminal of Zaragoza (Aragón) to optimize intermodal and cross-border transport between Spain and France, as well as the construction of a safe parking area for trucks in the Murcia-Almería section, are noteworthy. As regards maritime routes, the Commission has selected a project to electrify the port of Algeciras and the construction of an intermodal platform for roll-on/roll-off vessels in the port of Huelva.

Background
The 107 projects have been selected from a total of 353 submitted in response to the call for proposals published in 2022.
EU funding will take the form of grants, which will be used to co-finance the total project costs.
Under the CEF transport program for the period 2021-2027, EUR 25.8 billion is available for grants to co-finance TEN-T projects in EU Member States. Since 2014, the CEF has supported almost 1,300 projects, totaling EUR 29.4 billion in the transport sector (excluding today’s proposed selection).
More funding opportunities are available under the CEF Transport, with the 2023 Military Mobility call currently open until September 21, 2023 and the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility calls until November 7, 2023. The next CEF “Transport” calls for proposals will be launched towards the end of September 2023.
