The specific research will focus on midbrain-cerebellar circuitry related to the encoding of optic flow signals, and their transformation into motor programs for flight control in hummingbirds, zebra finches, and pigeons. Techniques will involve some combination of electrophysiology, immunohistochemistry, optogenetics, and free flight tracking in virtual reality environments. Experience in these specific topics is not as important as an interest in mechanisms of animal behavior and expertise in data analysis and manuscript composition.
