The International Research Institute for Disaster Science (IRIDeS) was established at Tohoku University following the catastrophic 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami. IRIDeS brings together the know-how of Tohoku University and conducts the most advanced research on natural hazards, disasters, and disaster risk reduction, with the aim of contributing to ongoing recovery and reconstruction efforts in disaster-affected areas and being a global center for disaster science in cooperation with research organizations from many countries. Based on lessons from the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami in Tohoku, IRIDeS is making efforts to shift paradigms in disaster risk reduction to cope with catastrophic disasters caused by natural hazards. To this end, IRIDeS is developing practical research on disaster risk reduction that proposes solutions for disaster risk reduction and is contributing to sustainable and resilient societies both in Japan and abroad.

Job Functions

This research field establishes advanced technologies for disaster risk assessment and prediction with the aim of creating a sustainable and resilient society. The position will focus on developing technologies for complex disaster risk assessment, real-time damage prediction, efficient visualization of disaster impacts, and probabilistic risk assessment considering uncertainties in natural hazards, exposure, and vulnerability, by introducing advanced approaches such as digital twins and data-driven sciences. This position will also promote basic and practical research for societal implementation of the developed technologies in collaboration with various fields of disaster science.
The position is expected to contribute to education in the department of civil and environmental engineering.

Requirements

Successful candidates should hold a PhD in Earth Sciences, Informatics, Engineering, Computer Science or a related field.
Candidates are expected to have achieved outstanding research results in the above-mentioned research fields.
