Do you know what the Documentation Center of Almeria does?
The main objective of the CDE of the UAL is the promotion of research and dissemination of EU news and its impact on Spain and Andalusia.
We provide the university community and citizens with access to EU information and documentation thanks to its extensive digital collection, the archive of multimedia documents and easy access to the main agencies and institutions of the European Union.
The informative activity and the support to training and research on the European integration process is strengthened by the publication of bulletins on the main EU policies, as well as by the organization of training activities such as courses, seminars or conferences. In this way, we proceed to collect the activities carried out during the year 2021 dividing them between informative and formative.
In addition, we disseminate all our activity in the different social networks:
NEWS
Last year we published an average of 49 news items per month with a total of 583! Our main sources of information are the European Parliament, the European Commission, institutional sites such as CORDIS, ECDC, EMA, WHO, and many more. These news were not only reflected on our website, we also disseminated them through our official profiles on social networks such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Linkedin.
The thematic area that we have worked on the most in 2021 has been “Institutional Affairs” followed by “Research and Innovation”, “Health” and “Market” together with “Environment”.

Have you noticed? it’s a calendar! At the end of the year, we put together all the months to create the 2022 calendar of CDE Almeria. You can access the post with all the information and download links to start 2022 with the organization ahead.
As we told you at the beginning of this news, our main objective is the promotion of research and dissemination of the current affairs of the European Union in Spain and Andalusia. Although most of our activity is carried out digitally, we collaborate regularly with the Nicolás Salmerón Library of the University of Almeria, the International Doctoral School of the UAL, the Vice-Rectorate for Research and Innovation of the UAL and the different Faculties of the university, especially with the Faculty of Economics and Business, the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Humanities.
We emphasize that, despite the fact that our main way of transmitting our activity is our website, we work with social networks on a daily and active basis: Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Linkedin and Youtube.
European Day of Languages
20 years celebrating cultural and linguistic diversity.
The 47 member states of the Council of Europe encourage more than 800 million Europeans to learn other languages at any age, in and out of school. Convinced that linguistic diversity is a key tool for greater intercultural understanding and a key element in the rich cultural heritage of our continent, the Council of Europe promotes multilingualism throughout Europe.
On the initiative of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, the European Day of Languages has been celebrated on 26 September every year since 2001.
With more than 595 events in 41 different countries and more than 130,000 participants, the European Day of Languages is a celebration of diversity. Its objectives are: to highlight the importance of language learning and diversify the variety of languages learned with the aim of increasing multilingualism and intercultural communication; to promote the richness of Europe’s linguistic and cultural diversity, which we must preserve and enhance; and to promote lifelong language learning both inside and outside school, whether for the purpose of studies, exchanges, professional needs, mobility or pleasure.
European Night of Researchers
For the tenth consecutive year and at the same time as in 371 other European cities, we joined together to discover the most human side of research through direct contact and conversation with the experts themselves. It is the European Researchers’ Night, which was held on September 24, 2021 in the eight Andalusian capitals.
In this edition, the activities carried out guaranteed the necessary measures against COVID-19 and, in addition, online activities were prepared to be enjoyed directly from the web.
In total, there were more than 650 activities to bring science and the people who do research closer to the general public, to demonstrate in a practical and playful way the relationship between research and everyday life, and to disseminate scientific studies among young people.
The 2021 edition was dedicated to the EU Green Deal, a plan that includes fifty concrete actions for the fight against climate change, which aims to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. The activities promoted in the eight Andalusian provinces had the Green Deal as a common thread.
From the CDE of Almeria we carried out various activities with citizens to raise awareness and inform about what the European Green Deal is and how it affects all Europeans.
International Meeting of the Ibero-American Knowledge Space: Internationalization of the Curriculum through Telecollaboration
Although international university mobility has increased in recent years, it is necessary to develop both curricular and extracurricular experiences and activities that favor the internationalization of our campuses. On the other hand, the experience and acquisition of international competencies and skills required for university education in the 21st century should not be limited to the small percentage of students and professors who undertake mobility, which in most cases is subject to international agreements. For this reason, more and more universities are promoting the use of ICTs, especially through international telecollaboration activities, as it facilitates students’ access to international knowledge and the acquisition of intercultural competencies and skills.
This trend towards the development of telecollaboration has become almost a necessity, following the experience of COVID-19 in the educational field. According to UNESCO data, more than 1.5 billion people lost access to face-to-face education during the first months of the pandemic. Although the term telecollaboration usually refers to didactic activities aimed at improving the intercultural and communicative competence of foreign language students, the experience of recent months allows us to assess its application to other areas of knowledge as a tool that enhances inter-university cooperation and the internationalization of the curriculum.
Within this framework of strengthening an Ibero-American Knowledge Space, sponsored by the International University of Andalusia (UNIA) and the Group of Ibero-American Universities La Rábida, links between university institutions will be especially promoted, thanks to the participation of specialists in virtual teaching, internationalization of the curriculum, university governing bodies, personalities linked to different areas of the social and productive fabric, as well as government officials, whose experiences in the dynamics of internationalization will help us design a solid structure for inter-university cooperation.
Ana Fe Gil Serra, as director of the European Documentation Center of Almeria, presented the main results of the European pilot program Erasmus+Virtual Exchanges and its impact on European higher education, and Emilio Peña, from the Foundation of the University of Almeria, presented the most significant results of the effort made by Spanish universities to adapt their teaching activity to the needs arising during the pandemic.
Archivo Digital España-Unión Europea/Spain-European Union Digital Archive (SEDAS)
This year we have begun to participate in SEDAS, which collects relevant documents in all formats (text, image, audio, video) on Spain and the European Union, currently scattered in the bibliographic and documentary collections of institutions in the European Union. It also collects intellectual production of universities, mainly Spanish, on the subject.
It is a digital repository, in open access, created by 20 European Documentation Centers (EDC) of Spanish universities and the Representation of the European Commission in Spain, in collaboration with the Secretary of State for the European Union. More information at http://seda.uji.es

Laura Diepstraten García
Born in Almería, singer and songwriter Laura Diepstraten, winner of the first edition of the International Low Vision Song Contest, the Eurovision Song Contest for blind artists, is the #EuropeanPersonage of the month of September chosen by the European Documentation Center of Almeria.
Last July, Laura Diepstraten surprised some of the participants of the Summer Courses of the University of Almeria with her improvised interpretation of “Another Vision” on piano.
During her visit, Laura, with the kindness that characterizes her, gave us a little of her time to answer some questions posed by the Director of the European Documentation Center.
The brief interview begins with Laura’s beginnings in music and her relationship with the piano. She tells us that at the age of 6 she started playing when her family bought her a toy piano with which she was always playing. Feeling something very special for this instrument, she signed up for lessons and, definitely, the piano captivated her. “I want to play the piano!” Laura says she always said as a child, and she hasn’t stopped since.
The last stop for Laura and her family at the University of Almeria was at the Vice Rectorate for Research and Innovation, where the Vice Rector, Mr. Diego Luis Valera Martínez, congratulated her on her professional success, reminding her that she is already a model for all of us for her perseverance, humility and tenacity. He also told her that it would be an honor for her to be part of our university community.
