The positive report of verification of the degree by the DEVA is already a reality, which means that the first degree in Medicine will start next academic year 2022-2023 with 60 places. The rector of the UAL, Carmelo Rodríguez, assures that “this fulfils a historical demand that will have very positive repercussions for the University in the areas of teaching, research and internationalisation of the UAL, without forgetting the boost it will give to the city’s economy”.
The UAL has received this Wednesday 11 May the positive report of verification of the degree of Medicine by the DEVA- Directorate of Evaluation and Accreditation, that is, the final verification of the curriculum to start the first year of Medicine 2022-2023. This document completely closes the administrative process that the UAL has developed to achieve this degree. Until now, the degree had not been offered on the UAL website because of the lack of this report, but while this document was still pending, everything necessary was being prepared for the first year of Medicine to begin: timetables, teaching staff, infrastructure with works in the laboratories, etc. According to the syllabus of the new Degree in Medicine, future students will study 369 credits over six years, of which a significant percentage will be devoted to clinical practice in hospitals, especially in the final year.
The rector of the UAL, Carmelo Rodríguez, is very satisfied because “it is a day of great satisfaction for the University and for the whole province as the definitive verification of the study plan of the Medicine degree means that we are 100% sure that we will start in September with the first promotion of the Medicine degree at the UAL”, Rodríguez emphasised that “this meets the great demand of students, particularly from Almeria – I have always said the high percentage of students who request Medicine as a first option and cannot study it, therefore, we will partially resolve this situation”. The rector stressed that it is also a great day “secondly, because it is a qualitative leap for the UAL, as it will become a point of attraction for talent, not only for students from Almeria, but also for national and international students, because this will allow us to develop more agreements with universities in other countries”.
Without forgetting the positive repercussions it will have on a professional level, “the UAL is going to be a focus of attention for medical professionals, which will benefit hospitals and the population in general, as well as the new possibilities that will open up for research, the acquisition of the latest technology in the field of health care, etc. In short, total satisfaction,” he said.
The Degree in Medicine will be integrated into the Faculty of Health Sciences. As the UAL is an integral campus, it will have all the available infrastructures, i.e. 4 lecture halls for theoretical teaching, as well as in the Health Sciences building, which has 20 classrooms of “great capacity and flexible for different types of teaching”. In addition, the Medicine students will have Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry and Psychology laboratories at their disposal, equipped for the teaching of these subjects. These spaces will be completed with the adaptation of an existing space for a dissection room and laboratory, with direct access to the outside. With regard to Biostatistics practices and other courses with computer equipment needs, the UAL has enough computer rooms to cover the needs of medical students, and the new computer room building will be almost finished for the next academic year. Not forgetting that, in the medium and long term, the University of Almeria will construct a building on a 17,000 m2 plot of land, ceded by the City Council of Almeria in the vicinity of the Torrecárdenas University Hospital.
Rodríguez stresses that “this new degree will bring a great wealth in the academic and scientific fields, with the obtaining of new research resources that will benefit our hospitals, and there will also be a greater exchange of professionals”. The increase in prestige will also be reflected at an institutional level as it will open the doors to relations and agreements with international universities, allowing the mobility of both students and researchers, as well as a clear advance in research. The rector of the UAL also highlights “the economic impact that this new degree will have on the province itself, given that many students from Almeria will stay in Almeria and will attract students from abroad, so in a few years we will see how positive it will be for the Almerian economy”.
