The European Commission has approved the registration of a new designation, thereby recognizing its distinctive qualities.
The “Oli de Menorca/Aceite de Menorca” (as a protected geographical indication) is an organic extra virgin olive oil produced on the island of Menorca. It is a fruity oil, with a medium to intense flavor, and on the palate, it presents bitter and mildly to medium-pungent sensations. The characteristic that has most contributed to the reputation of “Oli de Menorca/Aceite de Menorca” is the “green” attribute of its fruitiness, which is determined by the timing of the olive harvest, specifically when the olives are still green. The harvesting of olives begins at the end of September. Another factor that supports the reputation of “Oli de Menorca/Aceite de Menorca” is its presence at local, national, and international fairs.
This new designation will be added to the list of the 3,639 agricultural products already protected. The list of all protected geographical indications is available in the eAmbrosia database.
