More than 60 screenings of the five films shortlisted for the European Parliament’s LUX 2023 Audience Award will be held in 16 Spanish cities.
In April, May and June, the European institutions are co-organising a series of screenings in 16 Spanish cities of the five films that have been selected as finalists for the LUX 2023 European Public Cinema Prize, the winner of which will be announced at a ceremony on 14 June in the European Parliament’s Chamber in Strasbourg (France).
The feature films that will be screened free of charge a total of 66 times in 16 Spanish cities are “Alcarràs” by Spanish director Carla Simón, “Burning Days” by Turkish director Emin Alper, “Close” by Belgian director Lukas Dhont, “The Triangle of Sadness” by Swedish director Ruben Östlund and “Fuego Fatuo” by Portuguese director João Pedro Rodrigues.
The films deal with themes such as the countryside, the genesis of power and sexual identity. The Spanish film “Alcarràs” tells the story of a family that has been cultivating a large expanse of peach trees in a small rural town in Catalonia for several generations.
Organisation of screenings
As part of this series of screenings, the European Parliament Office in Spain has directly organised the screenings that will take place at the Renoir Princesa cinemas in Madrid between 11 May and 8 June and those that will be shown from 3 to 31 May at the Cine Albéniz in Malaga.
The network of Europe Direct offices are also organising the rest of the screenings in the different cities, which will be hosted in public centres of local councils and autonomous communities and with other cinemas in the Europa Cinemas network. All the events to sign up and attend the screenings can be found on this website.
Context
The LUX European Film Public Prize is an initiative of the European Parliament and the European Film Academy, in partnership with the European Commission and the Europa Cinemas network. The aim of the award is to strengthen the links between politics and citizenship by inviting the European public to become active players and vote for their favourite films.
The choice of the winner each year reflects a combination of a direct rating by the public and by Members of the European Parliament, with each side accounting for 50% of the film’s final score to win the award.
Viewers can rate the films via this website until 12 June. Those who do so will be entered into a prize draw to win a number of prizes, including the chance to attend the award ceremony at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. For more information on the prize draw go to this page.
