The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, will visit Nouakchott (Mauritania) tomorrow. She will travel with the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez. This will be an opportunity to strengthen this country’s partnership with Europe, particularly through the Global Gateway strategy, and to discuss security, migration, and stability issues in the Sahel region.

Both presidents will hold a meeting with the President of Mauritania, Mohamed Ould El-Ghazouani, followed by an extended meeting with the respective delegations from the EU, Spain, and Mauritania. Next, they will participate in a roundtable dedicated to the topic of hydrogen, preceded by brief introductory remarks. At the end of the meeting, President Von der Leyen will make a statement, as will President Sánchez and President El-Ghazouani. The visit will conclude with signing ceremonies for several financing and development projects, with representatives from the EU, Spain, and the European Investment Bank (EIB), as well as their Mauritanian counterparts, in the presence of President Von der Leyen, Prime Minister Sánchez, and President El-Ghazouani.
Audiovisual coverage of the visit will be available and can be followed online through Ebs.
The visit comes after the Global Gateway Forum held in Brussels in October 2023, during which President Von der Leyen and President El-Ghazouani launched an initiative to support investment in Mauritania’s energy transition and decarbonization of the economy.
