The Faculty of Law and Criminology Department Metajuridica, is looking for a PhD-student with a doctoral grant.
You will work for the multidisciplinary Research Group on Law, Science, Technology & Society (LSTS), which is a prominent European research institute in the area of technology and regulation since 2003. The research staff of more than 50 professors and researchers has a background in law, ethics, philosophy, political science, sociology, criminology and others. This diversity brings a necessary multidisciplinary perspective to all research projects established.
The Brussels Laboratory for Data Protection & Privacy Impact Assessments, or d.pia.lab, has been a sub-unit within the VUB-LSTS since 2015. This lab connects basic, methodological and applied research, provides training and delivers policy advice related to impact assessments in the areas of innovation and technology development. Whilst legal aspects of privacy and personal data protection constitute its core expertise, the Laboratory mobilizes other disciplines including ethics, philosophy, surveillance studies as well as science, technology and society (STS) studies.
You will become a part of a dynamic international team, composed of both experienced and early career researchers, working under the guidance of Prof. Niels van Dijk (LSTS) and Prof. Kris Baetens (Psychology). Your work will be part of the 4-year research Belgian-Polish project ‘Risk as a subjective phenomenon. Integrating cognitive science into the concept of risk in European data protection law’, funded by the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO) and the Polish National Science Centre (NCN) under the Weave framework. The project is conducted in cooperation with a Polish partner from the University of Bialystok.
This project aims to better understand the subjective character of risk in data protection by further developing the concept of “risk to a right”. Recognizing the heuristics and cognitive bias influence on risk assessors within the process of Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA) will be an essential part of our research.
