Applications are invited for the role of Research Support Officer, Clinical Physiologist Neurophysiology, within the INFANT Centre.
The INFANT Research Centre was established in 2013 and is dedicated to maternal and child health research. The overarching vision of INFANT is to advance maternal and child health translational research and to place Ireland to the forefront of this field. INFANT is hosted by University College Cork (UCC) and is focused on delivering scientific excellence and impact through a range of activities in academic, translational, and commercial areas. The INFANT team is a diverse group of clinicians and scientists who are supported by selected industry partners, international collaborators and business and regulatory advisors. The Centre is funded by a range of national and international funding agencies, EU, industry, and philanthropy. INFANT has a well-established Clinical Trials Platform which is underpinned by ISO 9001:2015 accredited Quality Management System.
INFANT is now accepting applications for a Clinical Physiologist (Neurophysiology) to work on the ELEVATE Programme for the Prediction, Early Detection & Intervention in Cerebral Palsy. It is funded by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) and the Cerebral Palsy Foundation through the SFI Strategic Partnership Programme.
INFANT seeks a Clinical Physiologist (Neurophysiology) with substantial experience in neonatal and paediatric EEG to undertake EEG recordings, Evoked Potentials and other physiological monitoring. The role requires at least 5 years’ experience in Paediatric EEG recording and interpretation. A significant part of this role will require EEG and EP annotation and analysis. Previous research experience is desirable but not essential
Duties of the position
This title will apply to a person of appropriate qualifications e.g., BSc, MSc or PhD employed on a contract for the purpose of supporting a research project, programme, centre or institute. A Research Support Officer will work under the direction of one or more Principal Investigator (s)/ Senior Researcher(s) within a dedicated laboratory on one or more research projects.
The key duties and responsibilities include:
PROFESSIONAL
- Provide a high standard of clinical research work within a multi-professional research team.
- Ensure clinical research work is conducted in accordance with clinical research protocols.
- To regularly assess the needs of the research project/area and effect any changes as required.
- To participate in internal and external working groups to develop and share evidence based best practice.
- To undertake research, working under the direction of a Principal Investigator or their nominee in clinical areas to support the research project/area.
RESEARCH
- Manage, coordinate, organize and implement basic science and clinical trial protocols to support the research project/area.
- To ensure accurate collection and maintenance of all study records, including those of team members.
- To actively participate in recruiting patients for trials, liaising with other professional groups and research staff to achieve this as required.
- When appropriate, assist in the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to support the research project/area.
- Facilitate effective communication of complex study information with all relevant research personnel, including medical, nursing, administrative and pharmacy staff, as required.
- To perform EEG, Evoked potentials and other physiological monitoring.
- To undertake grading and labelling of prospective and retrospective EEG data
- To contribute to research analysis and publications.
- To support the training of colleagues both within Cork and partner hospitals in Dublin in the use of EEG equipment and interpretation of data.
MANAGEMENT
- Manage own workload, patient interviews and co-coordinating investigations and procedures and arranging any follow up necessary for complex research trials, as required.
- Develop effective working partnership with staff, ensuring the two-way flow of all necessary documentation and information.
- Report adverse events to Principal Investigator or his/her nominee and ensure completion of appropriate documentation.
- Inform the Principal Investigator or his/her nominee of any untoward incidents or problem areas affecting the research project/area.
- Compile information for and accurately complete project reports for delegated studies.
- Promote effective teamwork, initiate and support management of change within the research project/area, as required.
- Ensure safe use of equipment in the research area.
EDUCATION & DEVELOPMENT
- Participate in teaching programmes for staff as required.
- Act as role model, encouraging staff to develop new ways of working.
- Assist/educate participants in research protocols and methodologies.
- Recognise and use spontaneous and formal learning opportunities and share knowledge and experience with other staff.
- Continue to maintain and develop personal and management skills by undertaking mandatory and other training as required.
- Support research staff in the implementation and organisation of basic science and clinical trial protocols when appropriate.
Health & Safety: In addition to the statutory safety duties of all employees (as prescribed in safety legislation and the relevant local safety statement) each staff member is responsible for:
- Discharging any safety functions delegated to them by their Head of College \ School \ Department \ Centre \ Unit, in relation to the areas/ activities under their control
- Co-operating and assisting the University and the Head of College \ School \ Department \ Centre \ Unit in the discharge of their statutory safety responsibilities
- Ensuring that all work under their control, is undertaken safely and without risk to health and complies with the provision of all relevant statutory legislation

Required selection criteria
The successful candidate will be expected to have:
Essential Criteria
- A graduate qualification in a field or discipline relevant to the area of investigation i.e. BSc, MSc of PhD.
- A qualification in clinical measurement science or clinical physiology, specialising in Neurophysiology
- A minimum of 5 years post qualification experience in a healthcare or research setting
- Substantial experience with reviewing and interpreting clinical paediatric EEGs.
- Proven experience of carrying out research in the relevant research speciality.
- Demonstrable achievements in delivering results.
- Ability to interact with stakeholders from a range of disciplines
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Excellent report writing and presentation skills.
- Capability of working effectively within a team to achieve results.
- Excellent organisational and communication skills.
- High level of initiative.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience in the field of Clinical Data Science and Analytics would be an advantage.
