In 2019, we commemorate the 150th anniversary of the creation of the periodic table, which orders the known elements according to the characteristics of their atoms. 2019 has been declared by the United Nations as the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements (IYPT 2019).
On this occasion, the University of Almeria is organising ENFOCA IX, a scientific photography competition, organised and coordinated by the OTRI, the Faculty of Experimental Sciences and the Photography Classroom of the UAL.
The objective of the competition, in addition to bringing research, science and technology closer to society through scientific images, aims to show images that interrelate our knowledge with the composition of the environment. Of all the images received, during the days leading up to Researchers’ Night 2019 and during Science Week 2019 at the UAL, an exhibition will be presented with a selection of the best photographs.
Theme
This year 2019 marks the 150th anniversary of the creation of the periodic table by the Russian chemist Dmitry Mendeleev, who in 1869 ordered the known elements according to the characteristics of their atoms.
The periodic table is a unique tool that allows scientists to predict the appearance and properties of the matter that makes up the universe and is considered one of the most representative milestones in the history of science. Therefore, the General Assembly of the United Nations has proclaimed 2019 as the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements (IYPT 2019).
The main objective of this initiative is to recognise the crucial role that the elements and chemistry play in sustainable development in providing solutions to many of the challenges facing society as a whole and to make their importance known to a wider public.
Awards
The Jury will make a pre-selection of the best photographs, selecting three finalists who will receive a diploma and from which 1 winning work will be selected which will receive a prize of 300€. The resolution and delivery of the prize will take place during the month of September.
All participants will be able to receive a certificate of participation in the project La Noche Europea de los Investigadores 2019 (The European Night of Researchers 2019). In addition, the winner of ENFOCA IX will participate in the National Photography Contest “What you don’t see” organized by the Spanish Conference of Chemistry Deans.
