Today, Dubravka Šuica, European Commissioner for the Mediterranean, will visit Madrid for the first time during this mandate to participate in a series of high-level meetings with Spanish national authorities to strengthen cooperation on key issues for the Mediterranean region.
The Commissioner will be received in audience by His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain and is scheduled to hold a series of meetings with representatives of the Spanish Government: the Commissioner will meet with José Manuel Albares, Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union, and Cooperation, and Elma Saiz, Minister of Inclusion, Social Security, and Migration.
During Commissioner Šuica’s visit, topics related to the Mediterranean portfolio will be discussed—particularly the new Mediterranean Pact—EU cooperation with North Africa, the situation in the Middle East, cooperation with Gulf partners, as well as regional cooperation within the framework of the Barcelona Process and the Union for the Mediterranean. The meeting with Minister Saiz will focus, among other things, on cooperation in migration management with Mediterranean partners, capacities, and legal pathways.
This visit to Spain is part of the consultation process led by Commissioner Šuica for designing the EU’s new policy towards Mediterranean and Gulf countries, with the aim of incorporating and reflecting the perspectives of EU Member States and our partners.
