More and more people are attending the monthly astronomical gatherings organized by the Aula de Astronomía of the University of Almeria. This is a free activity, until full capacity is reached, which is held in the Sala de Grados of the Edificio de Empresariales.
Jorge Iglesias, astrophysicist of the CSIC and director of the Aula de Astronomía, is in charge of it. The theme chosen for this month of January has been deep sky objects. “This is how it is known in the world of amateur astronomy to objects that are not of the Solar System, nor individual stars. Although grouped under the same term, deep sky objects have very varied and different natures from each other. We are basically talking about nebulae, star clusters and galaxies,” he explained.
Each month’s theme is chosen by the attendees at the previous gathering. “I like the fact that they choose it because it is in line with the format of the discussion, which is not a typical talk, but rather that the attendees raise their doubts, their knowledge about the subject, the things they have heard and the things that interest them”.

Since the beginning of the Astronomy Classroom at the UAL, more and more astronomy enthusiasts are participating in the activities organized. “In Almeria there is a lot of enthusiasm for astronomy. There is, for example, the Orion Astronomical Association, which has been around for many years and has awakened a lot of interest in this subject among the population, and I believe that the activities of the Astronomy Classroom, which are organized at the UAL, have formed an important group of enthusiasts. In addition, the presence of Calar Alto Observatory makes that, undoubtedly, the interest in this subject is growing among the Almerian society”.
