The Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security is looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Senior Researcher to lead our climate research portfolio. The Senior Researcher will be responsible for shaping the Institute’s climate research agenda and producing cutting-edge research and analysis that responds to the challenges and opportunities found at the intersection of gender, climate, and security issues. Reporting to the Director of Research and working closely with the Executive and Managing Directors, the Senior Researcher will envision, craft, and execute climate-related research projects and disseminate findings through academic, policy, and practitioner communities. The Senior Researcher will also be responsible for developing and teaching a graduate course on gender, climate, and security as part of the Institute’s graduate certificate program.

The ideal candidate will have substantive expertise and research experience on the gendered impacts of climate change, particularly in conflict-affected and fragile contexts. Knowledge of climate security, environmental peacebuilding, and international climate policy and diplomacy is highly desired. Candidates should also have working knowledge of relevant U.S. and international policy frameworks, including the Women, Peace and Security Agenda, National Action Plans on WPS, Sustainable Development Goals, US Global Fragility Act etc.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. and experience with mixed methods research design and intersectional gender analysis; fieldwork experience is a plus. Demonstrated ability to write for policy audiences is required, in addition to a track record of academic and scholarly publications. Experience managing research projects and budgets, supervising junior staff and students, and engaging with policy, practitioner, and academic communities is essential. Candidates with experience developing curricula and a record of teaching at undergraduate or graduate levels will are preferred.

Duties and responsibilities of the Senior Researcher include, but are not limited to:

Policy-Oriented Research

  • Develop a strategic vision for the Institute’s climate research portfolio.
  • Design and undertake short and mid-term research projects.
  • Produce original research reports, policy briefs, and other publications.
  • Contribute climate and gender analysis of countries included in GIWPS’ Conflict Tracker project.

Informing Policy and Practice

  • Provide timely policy-relevant analysis in response to current events and developments in the field.
  • Represent the Institute as a subject matter expert at key convenings, policy fora, and practitioner working groups.
  • Collaborate with the Policy and Programs Team to provide subject matter expertise on GIWPS climate events and policy advocacy efforts, including writing concept notes as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Communications Team on strategic communications and dissemination of GIWPS climate research and policy recommendations through academic, policy, and practitioner communities.

Supervision & Project Management

  • Recruit a Junior Climate Fellow to support the climate research portfolio.
  • Directly supervise the Junior Climate Fellow and, potentially, student research assistants as needed.
  • Work with the Director of Finance to manage donor relationships, project budgets, and grant reporting.
  • Develop funding proposals and respond to funding opportunities as needed.

Teaching

  • Develop 1-2 graduate courses on topics related to gender, climate, conflict, migration, displacement, development etc.
  • Teach one course per year.
  • Advise GIWPS graduate certificate students focusing on climate-related studies.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in political science, international relations, international development, climate, gender studies, peacebuilding, conflict resolution, anthropology, sociology, or related field.
  • At least 5 years of relevant professional experience in research and policy analysis.
  • Subject matter expertise in gender and climate change and knowledge of the Women, Peace and Security field.
  • Demonstrated ability to write for a policy audience, in addition to scholarly and practitioner communities.
  • Proficiency with mixed methods research design and human subjects research; experience with focus group discussions, interviews, survey design and analysis, and field-based research highly valued.
  • Teaching experience is not required but strongly preferred.
