PhD in experimental Tribology in Czech Republic

Inicio » EU Calls and Awards » Euraxess » Engineering and Architecture » PhD in experimental Tribology in Czech Republic

13/10/2020

Applications are invited for one Ph.D. position in Applied Physics within the Advanced Material Group (AMG) at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Czech Technical University in Prague.

As a team member of our group, the candidate is expected to undertake leading research focused on the design and application of 2D layered materials based on transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Key areas of research include TMD based coatings, hard coatings (i.e., Diamond-Like Carbon – DLC), and their tribological behavior. Candidates have some freedom in adjusting the Ph.D. program to suit their expertise.

Objectives

The experimental Ph.D. will involve the tribological characterization and optimization of the coatings in different sliding environments (i.e., vacuum, air, different moisture level, and contaminants). Results obtained on the macroscopic scale will be complemented by the tribological characterization of the produced wear tracks with the atomic force microscope (AFM). Across the scale mapping of the coatings, tribological properties will provide practical guidelines for the optimization of coatings design in order to achieve minimal friction. Finally, the candidate is encouraged to cooperate with the colleagues from the simulation section of the group in order to develop models (i.e., finite element models), which will be able to predict coatings behavior depending on the experimental input conditions.

Requirements

Successful candidates must have an MSc in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a closely related discipline. We are seeking highly motivated individuals with a solid background in physical chemistry/physics. Good knowledge of English, both written and oral, is compulsory.

The accepted candidate will be enrolled in the Applied Physics study program; hence, good knowledge of physics is mandatory. The first interview will consist of two parts: the candidate’s presentation focused on the previous research experience and interests and physics knowledge of the candidate (which will be checked by the interview panel). Finally, candidates will have a second interview with the panel of the Czech Technical University, who will confirm the candidate.
