New approach to prevent chemical pollution

You are here: Home / EU News / New approach to prevent chemical pollution

03/03/2021

The European Environment Agency (EEA) published a report on how to ensure that chemicals are safe and sustainable while preventing them from affecting people, the environment and climate change.

The EEA report “Delivering chemicals and products that are safe and sustainable by design” states that an evaluation of the performance of these products could reduce, from the initial phase, this chemical pollution and ensure a safety that does not compromise the health of citizens. A circular economy in Europe would be favored in reducing carbon emissions.

This evaluation should start by considering the performance that the product can offer to the customer. The selected products will then undergo an evaluation phase to assess their life-cycle effects, including their impact on the environment and their greenhouse gas emissions.

On the other hand, for these products to be sustainable, EEA proposes to develop methodologies that provide a minimum of performance in relation to safety and sustainability objectives. The European Commission with its research program, Horizon Europe, perceives a significant opportunity for this sustainability to be realized and to develop a series of decisions at the European level within the industries.
