The Salvador de Madariaga European Journalism Prize celebrates three decades. The jury has just announced the winners of the 2024 edition. The winner in the written press category is Nacho Alarcón, from El Confidencial; Íñigo Picabea, from Radio Nacional de España, for radio, while Sylvia Fernández de Bobadilla, from Televisión Española, has been awarded in the television category.
The jury’s deliberations
In the written press category, the jury highlighted Nacho Alarcón’s ‘ability to translate complex European information and complete the news by providing data, interviews and context – in many cases historical – which helps to understand it. All with a clear and direct language that is reflected not only in his work as a correspondent in Brussels, but also in new formats, such as the electronic newsletter Nexo Europa’.
In the radio category, for the jury, Íñigo Picabea ‘represents, like few others in radio, the dissemination and popularisation of European values expressed in our culture: the breaking down of physical and mental borders, the profound respect for others and for the plurality of ideas that have built the EU’.
In the television category, Sylvia Fernández de Bobadilla was honoured for her continuous interest in European news throughout her professional career. ‘Sylvia has managed to fit Europe into the various TVE programmes on which she has worked and has been able to communicate directly and clearly to viewers what is happening in Brussels, often focusing on minority issues.
