The European Commission, together with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), presented last Juen 16 an ‘AI Literacy Framework’ for primary and secondary education. The framework provides teachers, education leaders and policymakers with a shared vision of the skills pupils need to understand and use AI responsibly and ethically. It provides guidance and examples of classroom activities and is structured around four areas: getting to know AI, creating with AI, managing AI and configuring AI.
The framework also supports the European Union’s ambition to provide high-quality, inclusive and future-oriented digital education. As part of the Skills Union, the educational package — which will be presented later this year — will further contribute to adapting education systems to the digital transformation and AI. The initiative is being developed with the support of CodeAI and international experts.
Roxana Mînzatu, Executive Vice-President for Social Rights and Skills, Quality Employment and Readiness, said: “AI literacy is a key skill for our young people. Understanding and using AI responsibly is essential for Europe’s competitiveness, as well as for protecting our democracy and social cohesion, and it all starts in our classrooms. With the launch of this framework, we are taking an important step towards supporting AI education across Europe.”
