The European Commission is today launching the first call for proposals to bring together buyers and suppliers under the Critical Raw Materials Mechanism. Through a dedicated platform, buyers of critical raw materials will be able to aggregate demand and get in touch with suppliers, financial institutions and storage providers.
The Critical Raw Materials Mechanism forms part of the EU’s efforts to diversify the supply of critical raw materials, building on the EU Energy Platform. As EU industry remains heavily dependent on a limited number of third-country suppliers, the initiative aims to reduce vulnerabilities and strengthen economic security in the face of growing geopolitical risks by highlighting alternative sources. For businesses, particularly smaller ones, this will offer the opportunity to forge partnerships beyond their existing networks.
Focusing on strategic sectors such as rare earths, defence and battery materials, this voluntary, market-based tool complements existing trade relations without interfering in negotiations. Companies interested in participating in this first round can register before the end of April.
