What GIMM seeks: At this moment, GIMM is looking for a Technician to join the Organismal Metabolic Physiology Laboratory coordinated by Dr. Zita Carvalho-Santos, under the research project “Sub-cellular Metabolic Compartmentalization during Oocyte Development” funded by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative DAF, to execute the following activities under the supervision of Dr. Zita Carvalho-Santos (GIMM – Lisbon Site) and Dr. Jorge Carvalho (GIMM – Oeiras Site)

Duties of the position

  1. Clone genes or gene fragments;
  2. Create strategies for cloning into specific vectors;
  3. Generate and validate new vectors for producing Drosophila transgenic stocks;
  4. Generate and validate new vectors for transfecting in vitro cultured Drosophila cell lines;
  5. Perform luciferase assays in in vitro cultured Drosophila cell lines;
  6. Maintain Drosophila stocks;
  7. Dissect Drosophila tissues;
  8. Extract and prepare for metabolomics analysis, cytoplasmic fractions from Drosophila oocytes.

Required selection criteria

  • BSc and/or MSc degree in Biological Sciences (Molecular Biology, Cellular Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Biological Engineering or related fields);
  • At least 3 years of experience working in a laboratory;
  • Experience in using molecular biology tools and techniques including amplification of DNA by PCR, restriction and ligation of DNA fragments, traditional cloning or using enzymatic kits (Fusion or BP/LR recombinations), RT-PCR, DNA and RNA extraction;
  • Experience in designing strategies for cloning DNA fragments into vectors;
  • Experience with Drosophila is valued but not a requirement;
  • Focused, well-organized and very reliable working style;
  • Ability to work and learn independently, critical thinking capacity to independently develop research project and troubleshoot;
  • Motivation and interest for science;
  • Good capacity and value for teamwork, and communication skills;
  • Fluency in English.
Benefits
GIMM will offer outstanding working conditions including a full time and Unfixed-Term Employment contract predicted to start in December of 2024 for the necessary period to execute the work plan. GIMM offers an attractive remuneration that will be defined according to the merit and experience of the candidate and within the project budget and internal regulations, as well as Holidays and Christmas allowances subject to the current mandatory taxes accordingly to Portuguese Labor Law). A meal allowance will also be paid in the amount of 6€ per each working day
