European Data Protection Day
On 28 January 1981, the Council of Europe adopted Convention 108, the first legally binding international instrument on data protection. To commemorate this landmark development, every year the member states of the Council of Europe, as well as the EU institutions, agencies and bodies, celebrate Data Protection Day on 28 January. The purpose of the day, which is also known around the world as Data Privacy Day, is to raise awareness and promote privacy and data protection best practices.
In 2018 the signatories to the Convention agreed on an amending protocol to update it. At the same time, the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation, in force since 25 May 2018, became the single regulatory framework for the handling of personal data throughout the European Economic Area. Both the Convention 108+ and the GDPR contain provisions on international data transfers.
