Imagine a car you can drive for months without worrying about refuelling. It promises the Lightyear One, a sleek five-seater electric saloon powered by solar panels that uses very little energy.
The EU-funded LIGHTYEAR project has launched the first commercially available self-recharging solar car. The project is part of the new CORDIS video series “Make the Connection with EU-Science”.
This energy-efficient vehicle reduces dependence on the grid – and therefore on fossil fuels – and helps to overcome the main barriers to the acceptance of electric vehicles in the global market, such as range, high costs and high dependence on charging infrastructure.
“Lightyear’s goal is to provide clean mobility for everyone, everywhere. Their product strategy is to provide ultra-efficient, long-range solar vehicles,” said Qurein Biewenga, recipient of the LIGHTYEAR research grant. For more information on the LIGHTYEAR project, see the CORDIS results summary here.
