On 20 July, the European Commission launched the digital product passport register.
The digital product passport will contain information on various products, such as their origin, reuse options, instructions for use and regulatory compliance. It will normally be available via a QR code or a similar digital format. It will increase transparency in supply chains and help consumers make informed choices.
The new register creates a secure, centralised repository for hosting metadata linked to the passports (such as their unique identifiers) without storing data on specific products, which remains with economic operators or digital product passport service providers. As part of the Ecodesign Regulation for sustainable products, it will host information on digital product passports in the textile, steel, aluminium, tyres, furniture, ICT and energy-related products, as well as those covered by sector-specific legislation, such as construction products, toys and detergents.
The register is an essential step towards enabling the full implementation of the digital passport for various products, which is due to be applied for the first time to certain types of batteries from 18 February 2027.
To complement the registration process, the Commission has launched a helpdesk and a testing environment to help stakeholders prepare for the roll-out of the digital product passport. This complements the recently launched dedicated Digital Product Passport website, which provides guidance, technical documentation and support tools ahead of the February 2027 deadline for the application of the Digital Product Passport to certain types of large batteries.
