On 17 December 1999, the United Nations General Assembly made International Youth Day official. This day was created to celebrate annually the role of young people as indispensable agents of change, as well as to raise awareness in society of the challenges and problems they face.
How can you participate in this day?
In most cities, city councils and official bodies organise events to mark this day, such as festivals, concerts, talks and workshops. Find out about the events taking place in your community and get involved. You can upload photos of your participation to social media with the hashtag #InternationalYouthDay #InternationalYouthDay #InternationalYouthDay.
You can also watch a film or read a book about youth. Or do something you enjoy doing with your friends. And remember, youth is not a matter of age, it’s a matter of attitude – Happy International Youth Day!
