Up to fifteen delegations of the University of Almeria will be distributed by ten provinces of the northern peninsular in chronological order in karate, tennis, table tennis, athletics, handball, volleyball, football, badminton, swimming, beach volleyball, rowing. in March, tennis, judo, golf and triathlon, plus cross country held in March.
UAL Sports is preparing from the outside for a very intense Crescent Run, as during this period the mass movement will change, with 87 athletes accompanying the leader of each expedition. Their destination will be CEU 2023, although it began in isolation in March in the midst of the CAU’s three participants at the Spanish cross-country championships in Soria. Now, for the majority of matches, the University of Almeria will challenge a total of 15 modalities, both individually and collectively, mobilising a team of around 100 delegates. As a curiosity, it will be played in ten provinces in the north of the peninsula, not counting Malaga, from Salamanca to Huesca.
Manuel Calvo, head of External Competitions at UAL Sports, has referred to the logistical and human effort involved, “it will be several weeks of hard work, long and complex journeys”, but at the same time the satisfaction that comes from “offering the opportunity to our athletes to compete with the best, to see them fight on the track and enjoy the competition”, something that “more than compensates” this effort. Calvo acknowledged that “it is a source of pride to have students with this potential, both human and sporting”. In this sense, “the University of Almeria faces a new edition of the CEU with the same enthusiasm as always, trying to leave its name as high as possible in all the competitions in which it participates, but not only in the sporting aspect, but also in the image projected by its representatives outside the competition facilities”.
He remarked that from UAL Sports “the main objective that we set ourselves is that students who practice any of the sports modalities called in the Spanish Championships and who have a medium-high sporting level, can go to the university competition representing the University of Almeria and enjoy a unique experience, very different from what they normally have in their federated competitions”. In this respect, he added that the CEU’s mix “competing at a high level” with, “at the same time, meeting other university students who practice the same sport and being able to establish social relations and interact with them”. Starting this weekend, the machinery managed by the Consejo Superior de Deportes will get underway, which has already had its ‘fine tuning’ with the cross country.

The UAL will kick off with karate this Saturday, hosted by Huesca and organised by the University of Zaragoza. Next week it will be the turn of tennis, in Valladolid, table tennis, in Burgos, and athletics, in León, each of them organised by their respective universities. The month of April will close with handball, with León repeating as host, as will Valladolid with volleyball and Zaragoza, the university organising the football competition, will appear on the travel map. During the May 1st long weekend, Valladolid will continue with badminton and swimming, followed by beach volleyball in La Cala del Moral, organised by the University of Malaga. There will be double competition between 9 and 13 May, paddle tennis and judo, in Salamanca, before moving on to Segovia the following week, where IE University will organise golf. The closing event will be organised by the University of Zamora, which will host this year’s triathlon competition on 3 June.
Among all the sports on the menu, Manuel Calvo pointed out that “there are options to reach the podium in several disciplines, the first of them being very soon because in karate our male athlete, Areg Petrosyan, has already won the bronze medal last year”. Also soon there is the possibility in athletics “with Isidro Leyva, who last year won the gold medal in pole vault”. In swimming “we are counting on the participation of Sonia Aguilar in two events, with the aim of winning a medal in both”. As for team sports, “both women’s handball and men’s volleyball are aiming to win a medal”, although “it won’t be easy, as the level in these championships is quite high, but they have worked very well throughout the year and we have two teams with a lot of quality, which can stand up to and beat any rival”. Calvo does not rule out any more and all the delegations will travel with the same amount of enthusiasm.
