The University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) will inaugurate its new Health Sciences building, constructed thanks to funding from the European Union.
The University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) will inaugurate its new interdisciplinary building “Margalida Comas i Camps” for Health Sciences at 10:00 on February 5, 2024. This state-of-the-art facility, financed under the European Union’s Recovery Assistance for Cohesion and the Territories of Europe (REACT-EU) program, illustrates Europe’s commitment to an ecological, digital, and resilient recovery.
Built with an investment of 6.9 million euros aimed at addressing the effects of the crisis in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the “Margalida Comas i Camps” building spans over 6,000 square meters. With the overall goal of improving infrastructure and equipment in higher education, the center houses departments of psychology, nursing, and physiotherapy to meet critical educational needs, promoting human capital and providing qualifications to the Balearic population.
A Benchmark for Environmental Efficiency
The Health Sciences building sets a new benchmark for environmental efficiency, incorporating strategies to reduce energy demand and using energy-efficient structural and construction approaches. The building is conceived as an autonomous energy-saving system and decentralization of local energy distribution. It prioritizes passive and simple systems, making it the most efficient building on the UIB campus. As such, the new building will contribute to advancing UIB’s goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2030.
