Inicio » EU News » Education and Culture » Culture » The free screenings of the finalist films for the LUX Prize begin in 17 Spanish cities

23 de January de 2025

The feature films will be screened for free in 17 Spanish municipalities, including two towns affected by the DANA.

Next Thursday, January 23, the first screening of the finalist films for the LUX Public Prize 2025, awarded annually by the European Parliament, will take place in Sant Pol de Mar (Barcelona). The feature films will be screened until April.

Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Gijón, Almería, Salamanca, Segovia, Pamplona, Tarragona, Zamora, Santiago de Compostela, Santander, Alfaro (La Rioja), Canet de Mar, and Sant Pol de Mar (Barcelona), Torrent, and Alzira (Valencia) will host screenings of the five films selected as finalists for the prize, the winner of which will be announced in a ceremony next April (date to be confirmed) at the European Parliament.

The films, which will be screened more than 70 times in the mentioned cities, are: “Animal” by Greek director Sofia Exarchou; “Dahomey” by Franco-Senegalese director Mati Diop; “Flow” by Latvian director Gints Zilbalodis; “Intercepted” by Ukrainian director Oksana Karpovych; and “Julie Keeps Quiet” by Belgian director Leonardo van Dijl.

The films address themes such as gender equality, cultural identity, work pressure, tourism, misinformation, and the devastation of planet Earth.

Organization of the screenings

Within this projection cycle, the European Parliament Office in Spain specifically organizes those that will take place at the Embajadores cinemas (Madrid) between March and April.

Meanwhile, the Europe Direct network offices will organize most of the screenings in various Spanish cities, hosted in cinemas—mainly from the Europa Cinemas network—and public centers of municipalities and autonomous communities.

In collaboration with Europe Direct Comunitat Valenciana, screenings will also be organized in Torrent and Alzira, two municipalities affected by the DANA from last October.

Context

The LUX Public Prize for European Cinema is an initiative of the European Parliament and the European Film Academy, in collaboration with the European Commission and the Europa Cinemas network. The purpose of this award is to strengthen the link between politics and citizens by inviting the European public to actively participate and vote for their favorite films.

The winner is chosen based on a combination of direct public ratings and votes from Members of the European Parliament, with each accounting for 50% of the final score for each of the nominated films.

Viewers can rate the feature films through the website until April. Those who participate will be entered into a raffle for several prizes, including the opportunity to attend the award ceremony at the European Parliament in Brussels.

For more information on the screening cycles in the different cities, you can check the contact details of the Europe Direct offices through this link.
