The European Commission has appointed María Antonia Martínez Luengo as Director for “Macroeconomic Statistics” in the Commission’s Directorate-General for Statistics (DG Eurostat), responsible for providing high quality statistics and data on Europe in collaboration with the national statistical authorities of the EU Member States and for proposing all EU statistical legislation. The date of entry into force will be determined at a later stage.
Ms Martínez Luengo, a Spanish national, has extensive professional management experience of almost 30 years in the field of quantitative economics and statistical operations. She brings strong statistical leadership and strategic management skills in key statistical areas, together with extensive experience in managing the dissemination and communication of statistics and data.

Since September 2015, Martínez Luengo has been Director of the National Accounts Department and member of the Board of Directors of the National Statistics Institute (INE). Earlier in her career, she also worked as Deputy Director of Economic Accounts and Employment at INE.
María Antonia Martínez Luengo began her career as a researcher and associate professor in the Faculty of Economics at the Autonomous University of Madrid, teaching statistics and probability. She holds a PhD in Applied Economics.
