C.I.R.D.E., in cooperation with the Law School of the Strasbourg University, the Centre for European Law of King’s College London and the Centro Residenziale Universitario di Bertinoro (Ce.U.B.), and with the financial support of the Fondazione Cassa dei Risparmi di Forlì, organises every year a Summer School on “The Protection of Fundamental Rights in Europe”.
The XIXth edition of the Summer School on “The Protection of Fundamental Rights in Europe” aims to provide undergraduate students, practitioners, civil servants and young researchers (Ph.D. candidates – Post docs) with an understanding of the role played by fundamental rights at national, European and international level. The Summer School will focus on the the interaction between different levels of protection of fundamental rights in Europe. The general courses are about the European Convention on Human Rights, and the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. The single modules tackle topics alike asylum and migration, EU citizenship, relationship between the CJEU and the ECHR, the margin of appreciation doctrine, constitutional transitions and religious freedom.
The course will consist in 30 hours of lectures and/or seminars held in English or French (the working languages), which will take place from 09:30-13:00 and 15:00-16:30 each day (Monday – Friday). The Summer School places a particular emphasis on the interaction between professors and students, who are expected to demonstrate, during the lectures, a strong interest and a general knowledge of the topics. Students are encouraged to actively engage in the courses.
The Summer School is hosted in the magnificient Rocca of Bertinoro, the ancient seat of the Bishop of the diocesis of Romagna, from 23 to 28 June 2019. The castle has been completely refurbished in 2000 thanks to a joint venture between the University of Bologna and the Provincia of Forlì Cesena. During the Summer School a number of leisure activities (wine tasting, aperitif on the beach and much more) is organized by the tutor, who, under his discretion, may organize also nights out.
Admissions
Participants are selected on a first to come first to serve basis, provided that they have a sufficient knowledge of the working languages (English and French), until expiry of available places (in this
case, priority will be given to students of the University of Bologna and to Ph.D. candidates). Selecte participants will have 5-nights half-board accommodation (lunch and breakfast included) at the University Centre of Bertinoro (www.ceub.it), thanks to the support provided by the Fondazione Cassa dei Risparmi di Forlì, plus the possibility to attend the course paying a subsidized participation fee of 150 € (informations on payment will be passed to selected participants).
