The Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) is looking for a post-doctoral researcher for sediment transport dynamics studies for the Environmental Solutions unit. The office will be in Espoo in the Helsinki capital area. The job will be in the PHYTOTRANS project funded by Research Council of Finland, with collaborating partners from the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE). There is also strong international collaboration with e.g. National Oceanography Centre (UK), University of Gothenburg (SE) and University of Southern Denmark (DK).
Duties of the position
The appointee will be expected to carry out research in the field of sediment transport dynamics in the northern Baltic Sea; be responsible for the operation of acoustic and optical instruments attached to a benthic lander, including high-resolution in-situ measurements of near-bottom water profiles of flow velocity and suspended particle concentration and size; measure changes in the elevation and migration of seafloor bedforms, such as ripples; develop methods and carry out advanced data analysis, integrating these measurements to advance the understanding of lateral sediment dynamics in the marine environment and enabling the direct quantification of sediment transport in the near-bottom water and on the seafloor; carry out a ca. 1-month research visit to one of their international collaborators and disseminate findings in scientific conferences and peer-reviewed scientific articles.
Required selection criteria
Applicants should possess a PhD in geophysics, civil or environmental engineering, physical oceanography, geosciences, or any related field; sound programming skills (e.g. C/C++, Git, Python, R, Bash); experience in measurements, modelling sediment transport dynamics and in acoustic measurement technologies; knowledge on processing and integration of instrument data; understanding of physical oceanography; ability and willingness to participate in research cruises on the Baltic Sea; English language proficiency, both oral and written and demonstrated ability to write scientific publications. Experience in optical measurement technologies; knowledge on sedimentology and sedimentary (bio)geochemistry; strong international networks and networking skills; experience in international work settings and interest in learning Finnish language wil be appreciated.
Benefits
The selected candidate will be offered a salary of EUR 4226-4504 per month, the possibility of working remotely in Finland, activities to support well-being at work and relocation services for employees moving to Finland from abroad.
