A PhD position (with scholarship) is available, with the theme “Design and analysis of architectures and algorithms for edge-enabled networking”.
The research program will entail finding creative solutions to challenging problems, evaluating them via formal analysis, simulation, or prototyping, and publishing the results in leading journals and conferences. Possible areas of applications will be 5G/B5G/6G mobile networks, as well as avionic networks.
The above activities will be carried out in close contact with leading international ICT industries, in the framework of EU-funded/industry-funded research projects.
PhD students have a salary (net: 1150 euros per month – the amount is set by the Italian law) for the entire duration of their PhD (3 years). That salary is increased (by 50%) if they are required to spend time abroad. University expenses (e.g., books, hardware, travel expenses for conferences etc.) are covered by research funds.
A PhD salary is more than enough to cover the cost of living in Pisa (which is lower than elsewhere in Italy, due to Pisa being a university town full of students).
PhD students may (voluntarily) serve as teaching assistants, for which they receive an extra salary.
PhD students are entitled to all the services and benefits of students at the University of Pisa, including reduced-price daily meals at the DSU canteens in town. For foreign students, enrolment to the Italian National Health Service costs 149.77 euros per year, and this entitles you to the same medical assistance as Italian citizens.
Candidates must possess an MSc degree in one of the following fields:
- Computer Engineering (preferred)
- Computer Science
Different qualifications will only be considered if they differ in name, but not in substance, from the above.
Candidates should preferably already possess their MSc degree by the time they apply. Applications are allowed also from candidates that will obtain their MSc degree by September 2022 (conditional to their actually obatining it).
Excellent English (B2 or higher) is also a requirement. Candidates are not required to speak Italian.
