PhD fellowship in Philosophy in Belgium

Description

The PhD fellow studies the Magna Moralia and its contribution to medieval moral philosophy. Central in your research is the 13th-century Latin translation of Aristotle’s Magna Moralia, made by Bartholomew of Messina. The candidate is expected to critically edit this translation according to the standards of the Aristoteles Latinus series, which implies not only a study of the Latin tradition but also of its Greek sources. In addition, you are expected to study the reception of this text in medieval thought.

They offer a fully funded PhD fellowship for 2 years, extendable up to 4 years, at the KU Leuven. Starting date (preferably) 1 October 2021.

The candidate will conduct scientific research, leading to a doctoral degree, under the supervision of Prof. dr. Lisa Devriese. You will have the opportunity to participate in international conferences, publications, academic teaching, and workshops.

Eligibility criteria

• MA in Language and Literature: Latin and Greek, MA in philosophy or MA in history with academic distinction. Those who graduate in July 2021, can also apply.
• You meet the conditions for admission to the doctoral program of the Institute of Philosophy (hiw.kuleuven.be/en/research/phd)
• Excellent knowledge of both Latin and ancient Greek is mandatory.
• You are interested not only in philology and text editing but also in the history of philosophy and science.
• Knowledge of (Latin/Greek) palaeography and codicology is a plus.
