The latest figures for products and licences certified by the European Ecolabel published today show a steady upward trend for most product groups. The growing use of the EU Ecolabel is accelerating compared to previous years. Europeans can choose from almost 100,000 EU Ecolabel certified products and services, 10,000 more than last year.
Tourist accommodation services have experienced the strongest growth and hold the highest number of licences, with an increase of 14 % in the last six months. In addition, three other European Ecolabel product groups have shown significant growth in the last six months: furniture, tissue products and hard surface cleaning products. The European Ecolabel is also spreading internationally, with more than 2 600 products and 109 licences awarded to companies outside Europe.
Created in 1992, the European Ecolabel is the only pan-European voluntary scheme that promotes goods and services that clearly demonstrate environmental excellence, based on established processes and scientific evidence. To be awarded the European Ecolabel, a product or service must possess excellent environmental characteristics – according to several criteria – throughout its entire life cycle: from the extraction of raw materials, production and delivery, to use and end-of-life. These criteria relate, among others, to sustainable components, low production emissions, durability, ease of repair and high performance in the intended use.
