Are you a versatile mechanical designer with a passion for challenging projects in the field of particle physics experiments? Then seize this opportunity and join the LHCb design and integration office where you will contribute to future enhancements and upgrades of the LHCb detector! LHCb is one of the four large experiments at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The detector consists of several subsystems such as a high-precision (~10 μm resolution) silicon detector operating in a secondary vacuum, a 1500-ton dipole magnet and a large-area (~ 6 m x 5 m), lightweight scintillating fibre detector, just to give a few examples. Its operation requires complex infrastructure in terms of support structures, electrical power, cooling and data acquisition.
Duties of the position
The appointee will be expected to use CATIA V5 to prepare 3D models and 2D construction drawings (using ISO-GPS norms for dimensioning and tolerancing); perform integration studies of infrastructure and detector systems to be installed in the LHCb experimental area; carry out mechanical dimensioning of components using analytical or numerical methods; prepare technical specifications and procure components; follow up on and take part in the construction, quality control, assembly and installation of components you have designed; update models and drawings and follow the evolution of the PLM (Product Lifecycle Management); take part in installation and dismantling activities in the experimental area and participate in the LHCb infrastructure and safety stand-by duty service.
Required selection criteria
Applicants should possess a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of mechanical engineering or a related field; experience in preparing 3D models, managing CAD assemblies and preparing manufacturing drawings, according to ISO-GPS standards; competencies in integration of mechanical systems, production of 2D drawings and 3D models, design and analysis of mechanical structures, design codes and compliance verification of mechanical equipment and application of manufacturing methods and work preparation and ability to understand and speak English in professional contexts and draw up technical specifications and knowledge of French or willingness to acquire it would be an asset. Experience in working with CATIA V5 and PLM (Product Lifecycle Management), multi-disciplinary teams and mechanical machining will be a plus.
Benefits
The selected candidate will be offered a contract for 3 years with the possibility to apply for an indefinite position subject to certain conditions.
