The European Commission has approved the inclusion of Spain’s ‘Queso de Burgos’ in the Register of Protected Geographical Indications (PGI).
Queso de Burgos is a fresh cheese made from cow’s and sheep’s milk. It is white or slightly yellowish in colour and soft in texture. The cheese has a mild, milky taste, and the persistence of the sheep’s milk flavour, which ranges from mild to noticeable, depends on the variety. The product is produced exclusively in the province of Burgos in the Autonomous Community of Castile-Leon. Its qualities are closely linked to traditional cheese-making practices in the area and to the use of local sheep’s milk, which gives it its characteristic aroma, buttery consistency and reputation.
This new designation adds to the more than 3 675 protected designations already listed in the eAmbrosia database.
