29 de May de 2024

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the entry into force of the European Economic Area (EEA) Agreement. The EEA Agreement, which unites our States in the internal market, has been the bedrock of our close and special partnership. It has greatly contributed to the prosperity of our societies and economies. This exceptional milestone invites us to reflect on the contribution of EEA cooperation to continuous development, long-term shared prosperity, peace and stability. Today, the EEA has grown to encompass 30 States and nearly half a billion people.

This unique Agreement ensures the free circulation of persons, goods, services and capital through the application of homogenous rules and policies in areas such as the environment, climate action, competition and social policy, guaranteeing legal certainty and predictable conditions for our citizens and businesses. The EEA Agreement also bolsters the shared values and principles of democracy, the commitment to an international rules-based order, individual freedoms, the rule of law and fundamental rights.

Our close cooperation in reacting to the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine further demonstrates the importance of defending shared fundamental European principles and values. The robustness and versatility of the EEA confirms the value of its economic and political model. We have shown our ability to swiftly react to the needs of our time. In this regard, the European Political Community is a unique platform conceived to enhance security, stability and prosperity across the continent, through dialogue among its 47 states on an equal footing and in a spirit of unity. We welcome the fact that Ukraine shall be at the forefront of the forthcoming discussions in this format.

Our commitment to the EEA Agreement extends into the future and reflects our desire to build a peaceful, economically strong and resilient Europe for future generations. At this landmark of the 30th anniversary of the EEA Agreement, we reinforce our dedication to wide-ranging cooperation, such as in fair and sustainable trade, energy transition, fight against climate change, technological development and innovation, environment, culture, education, social policies, research and health. We look forward to further expanding this steadfast cooperation, building upon a solid and proven formula to take advantage of the opportunities that the future holds.
