11 de January de 2024

‘Cabrito de Extremadura‘ and ‘Terre Abruzzesi’/’Terre d’Abruzzo’ are entered in the register of protected geographical indications (PGI).

The European Commission yesterday approved the inclusion of “Cabrito de Extremadura” – kid meat from the Spanish region of Extremadura – and “Terre Abruzzesi”/”Terre d’Abruzzo” – wines from the Italian region of Abruzzo – in the register of Protected Geographical Indications (PGIs).

Cabrito de Extremadura‘ is the meat of kids born, reared, fattened and slaughtered in the Autonomous Community of Extremadura. The suckling lambs are initially fed with their mother’s milk. Because of the breed and feed of the animals, this milk has special characteristics that differ from milk produced outside Extremadura. The composition is such that these differences are transferred to the meat of the kids. In the region of Extremadura, kid goats have been reared since ancient times. The uniqueness of ‘Cabrito de Extremadura’ is determined not only by the tradition and history of this product over the centuries in the Extremadura region, but also by the colour of the meat, the fat, the supreme tenderness, a moderate level of intramuscular fat infiltration and the pleasant texture.

The list of all protected geographical indications can be found in the eAmbrosia database. More information is available online on the quality systems page and on our GIView portal.

Terre Abruzzesi / Terre d’Abruzzo‘ comprises several categories of wine, semi-sparkling wine and wine made from raisined grapes. The characteristics of these wines are mainly determined by the special soil and climatic conditions of the production area, which is characterised by extensive sunny hills combined with the presence of the Adriatic Sea to the east, and the Gran Sasso and Maiella massifs to the north-west and south-west respectively, which favour the formation of important air currents. The mild climate, the well-drained soils with good water availability and the marked variations between night and daytime temperatures ensure optimum ripening of the grape clusters. These conditions are ideal for the health of the grapes and for the accumulation of aromatic substances, resulting in wines with an intense and characteristic fragrance.
