The Commission today announced 20 winners of the New European Bauhaus (NBE) 2024 awards, for the fourth consecutive year, organised with cohesion policy funding.
These awards reward outstanding projects and initiatives that combine sustainability, inclusiveness and aesthetics, demonstrating how the European Green Pact transition can practically enrich the lives of individuals and communities. The awards are given in four categories and two strands: one for established projects (the “European New Bauhaus Champions”) and one for promising initiatives by younger applicants (the “European New Bauhaus Rising Stars”).
The 2024 edition includes a special award for reconstruction projects in Ukraine, as well as a strong focus on EU regions facing socio-economic constraints or ecological transition challenges.
The winners received their awards today during a ceremony at the New European Bauhaus Festival by Elisa Ferreira, Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, and Iliana Ivanova, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, in the presence of Vsevolod Chentsov, Ukraine’s Ambassador to the European Union.
Winners of the European New Bauhaus Awards 2024Thewinners and finalists of the “European New Bauhaus Champions” award for completed projects are:

- Map4Water: A Thousand Springs (Bosnia and Herzegovina) won the public vote in all categories. The project is mapping and improving public water sources in Sarajevo, with broad public participation, including local authorities, citizens and tourists.
- Făget Forest Park; Cluj Green Lung (Romania), winner of the “Reconnecting with Nature” category, for managing the leisure and conservation of a large forest park.

- Flytevi – Blue Urban Community Garden (Sweden), finalist in the category “Reconnect with nature”, to empower communities with sustainable food and water solutions.
- Set Community Gardens (The Netherlands), , winner of the category “Watering a sense of belonging”, to connect generations from diverse socio-cultural backgrounds through an urban permaculture garden and community centre.
- Concrete for Culture (Bulgaria), in the category ‘Regenerating a sense of belonging’, to transform an office complex on the outskirts of Sofia into an active community space.

The winners and finalists of the “Rising Stars of the New European Bauhaus” award for promising concepts are:

- Regenerative Agriculture Hub (Spain) won the public vote in the “Rising Stars” chapter, for focusing on sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural practices that promote biodiversity.
- Cultivate a Company (Germany), winner of the “Reconnect with Nature” category, for proposing a research residence in a corner field to promote life-centred design thinking for architects and farmers.
- Hydroscape Lisboa (Portugal), finalised in the ‘Reconnect with nature’ category, for exploring the role of water in climate change resilience and community space in the city.
- Community Cooperative Ownership (Hungary), winner in the category “Recovering a sense of belonging”, to promote affordable housing and inclusivity through circular renewal and sustainable practices.

- Collection (Greece), finalist in the category “Recovering a sense of belonging”, to reimagine rural narratives through artistic and community collaboration.
- Rebuilding the community (Ukraine), winner of the category “Prioritising the places and people who need it most”, to empower Ukrainian communities through the creation or renovation of community building centres.
- Teufelsberg Transformation Lab (Germany), finalist in the category “Prioritising the places and people who need it most”, for pioneering collaborative policy innovation through Design Thinking.
- Urban_MYCOskin (Portugal), winner in the category “Shaping a circular industrial ecosystem and supporting life-cycle thinking”, for transforming waste into valuable environmentally friendly material.
- The station (Belgium), finalist in the category “Shaping a circular industrial ecosystem and supporting life-cycle thinking”, for proposing an autonomous workstation powered by renewable energies to transform seasonal harvests.
The winners and finalists of the “Special Recognition of Ukraine’s Reconstruction and Recovery Effort” are:

- Nad Dzherelom of Lviv City Council, winner, recognised for the restoration of an abandoned natural space for social integration, while preserving the ecosystem and biodiversity.
- The Leo States, finalists, for providing temporary accommodation for internally displaced persons in Ukraine.
The 20 awarded projects were selected from 49 finalists that embody the principles of the New European Bauhaus. They will receive a monetary award of up to 30,000 EUR and a communications package to help them further develop their projects or replicate them across Europe.
Background
The 2024 awards recognise the best NBE initiatives in four categories:

- Reconnecting with nature;
- Reclaiming a sense of belonging;
- Prioritising the places and people that need it most;
- Shaping a circular industrial ecosystem and Supporting life-cycle thinking.
Two parallel lines of competition are established in each of the four categories: “European New Bauhaus Champions” dedicated to existing and completed projects with clear and positive results, and “European New Bauhaus Rising Stars” dedicated to concepts submitted by young talents aged 30 and over.

Desde su puesta en marcha hace tres años en el discurso sobre el estado de la Unión de 2020 de la presidenta Ursula von der Leyen, la NBE ha inspirado un fuerte movimiento de base y una participación activa de los Estados miembros, las regiones y los municipios de toda la UE. Puso en marcha numerosas actividades en todos los Estados miembros (casi 500 proyectos específicos en total) en los ámbitos de la investigación y la innovación, la cohesión, el desarrollo regional y urbano, el desarrollo de capacidades y la cultura. Una comunidad dinámica de la NBE, con casi 1400 miembros, trabaja actualmente en toda la UE, llegando a millones de europeos.
