
The ECB’s Directorate General Market Infrastructure and Payments is responsible for the euro payment, securities settlement and collateral management systems, collectively referred to as “TARGET services”. Its tasks include overseeing the financial market infrastructure and payment instruments in the euro area, thereby contributing to the smooth functioning of financial markets. It also works with the financial industry to promote innovation and harmonisation of business practices across Europe. For example, it drives innovation in the areas of retail payments, instant payment solutions, securities settlement, collateral management applications and cyber resilience. This is its contribution to today’s digital world.
It is looking for interns to join one of our two divisions. The Market Infrastructure Development Division is responsible for business development, project implementation and service development in the areas of high-value payments, retail payments, securities settlement, collateral management and onboarding to TARGET Services. The Market Infrastructure Management Division oversees operations related to securities settlement, high-value payments and collateral management. It also coordinates and supports steering and technical groups composed of external stakeholders in order to address their needs in these operational areas.

Tasks:
As an intern in the Directorate-General for Market and Payments Infrastructure, you will participate in:
- supporting project management (including planning, monitoring and reporting), change management and onboarding to TARGET services;
- performing tasks related to policy and regulatory issues, system functionalities, and the design and development of financial market infrastructure services;
- establishing incident and crisis management procedures, supporting day-to-day operations and planning activities related to the implementation of TARGET services;
- contributing to stakeholder engagement (including coordinating meetings, documenting outcomes and drafting reports) to support the governance of TARGET services and collaboration with a variety of stakeholders, including financial institutions, central banks, Eurosystem committees and other EU institutions.
The traineeship offers you excellent opportunities to learn about financial market infrastructure and contribute to the Eurosystem’s role in this field, gaining experience in a wide range of tasks in one of the most interesting areas of the ECB. During the traineeship, you will gain practical experience in the implementation and operation of large and complex pan-European IT platforms. You will be part of a multicultural team that strives to continuously innovate in order to have a positive impact on the lives of European citizens.
Requirements:
- a bachelor’s degree or higher in economics, business administration, econometrics, programming, computer science, engineering, finance, mathematics, physics or a related field;
- advanced knowledge of MS Office, in particular Excel and PowerPoint;
- advanced (C1) proficiency in English and intermediate (B1) proficiency in at least one other official EU language, in accordance with theCommon European Framework of Reference for Languages.
