Would you like to start your career at a European Union agency dedicated to the prevention and control of infectious diseases? Every year, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) offers an internship programme in Stockholm, Sweden, aimed at university graduates who are at the start of their careers.
The placements provide an insight into how the ECDC operates and its role in protecting European public health, whilst offering the opportunity to gain professional experience and practical skills in an international environment.
Benefits
- €2,205.72 per month as a guide for 2026. (The exact amount of the grant for 2027 has not yet been determined and will be communicated to successful candidates.)
- Contribution towards travel expenses at the start and end of the placement.
- Duration of 5 to 9 months.
- Professional experience at an EU agency.
- Involvement in professional areas related to the ECDC’s activities.
Who can apply?
- Citizens of an EU Member State, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway.
- Must have completed their studies and obtained a university degree before the deadline.
- Excellent command of English. Knowledge of other EU languages will be regarded as an asset.
- You must not have previously undertaken, nor be currently undertaking, a placement or employment with an EU institution, agency, body or delegation, whether paid or unpaid.

For the 2027 intake, there are 12 internship places in various professional fields at the ECDC:
- Respiratory viruses
- Digital solutions
- Antimicrobial resistance and healthcare-associated infections
- Foodborne, waterborne and vector-borne diseases and zoonoses
- Social and behavioural sciences
- Scientific and public health communication
- Emergency preparedness and response
- Epidemiological intelligence
- Governance and international relations
- Human resources
- Procurement
- Sexually transmitted infections, blood-borne viruses and tuberculosis
Selection process
- Deadline for applications: 5 October 2026, by 12:00 (midday), Stockholm time.
- Candidates shortlisted for interview will be contacted from mid-October 2026 onwards.
- Interviews are scheduled to take place until mid-December 2026.
- The start date is expected to be between February and April 2027.
- Each candidate may submit only one application.
