At the 18th European Space Conference, five disruptive innovations received the Revolutionary Innovation Award for European Launch Solutions, in the presence of Commissioner Andrius Kubilius and MEP Christophe Grudler. Each winner received €950,000 for their innovation, which will redefine Europe’s access to space, strengthen our strategic autonomy and improve the competitiveness of the European space industry.
Driving innovation for sovereignty and sustainability
Funded by the European Parliament with an investment of €5 million, this Prize underlines the EU’s commitment to fostering innovation and responding to pressing challenges in access to space, an indispensable element of the space ecosystem, without which there can be no Union space policy in an increasingly competitive global market. From combating climate change to advancing digital infrastructure and ensuring strategic security, Europe’s ability to access space autonomously is non-negotiable. By supporting disruptive ideas, the EU aims to drastically reduce costs, improve sustainability and boost the agility and resilience of launch systems, ensuring that Europe not only catches up, but anticipates and shapes the technological revolutions that will drive future growth.
A first step towards a broader initiative
During the ceremony, Commissioner Kubilius announced a new €20 million grant, scheduled to launch in 2026. This initiative represents the EU’s long-term vision to accelerate innovation and consolidate Europe’s leadership in access to space. “To lead the space revolution, to lead the space economy, we need to do much more. We need launchers that can be reused over and over again,”said Defence and Space Commissioner Andrius Kubilius. By empowering innovators to push technological boundaries, the grant will drive a new era of European excellence.
