The confirmation hearings for Commissioner nominees in the European Parliament begin today. From Monday to Thursday, parliamentary committees will examine 20 of the Commissioners-designate and assess whether they are qualified both to be members of the College of Commissioners and to carry out the specific tasks assigned to them in the European Commission.
The confirmation hearings will continue on 12 November with the five nominees for Executive Vice-President – including the Spanish nominee, Teresa Ribera (S&D) – and the nominee for High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas (RE, EE).
Following the appearance of a Commissioner nominee, the chair(s) and the representatives of the political groups (coordinators) of the responsible parliamentary committees will meet without delay to assess the nominee. Based on the recommendations of the committees, the Conference of Presidents (consisting of EP President Roberta Metsola and political group leaders) is expected to carry out the final evaluation and declare the hearing process closed, scheduled for 21 November.
The vote in the plenary of the College of Commissioners (by a majority of votes cast by MEPs, by roll call) is expected to take place during the plenary session from 25-28 November in Strasbourg.
