The reason for the ONCE coupon is dedicated to Europe Day, 9 May, is due to the European Year of Capabilities. Five million coupons will be distributed throughout Spain to celebrate this day.
Alberto Durán, Vice-President for Institutional Coordination, Solidarity and External Relations of the ONCE Social Group, presented María Andrés, Director of the European Parliament Office in Spain, with a framed print of this coupon during the Europe Day Commemoration event, held on the morning of Wednesday 3 May at the ONCE Foundation’s Hub for Digital Talent.
In his speech, Durán stressed that this coupon “is an opportunity to show and make visible the alliance and commitment that the ONCE Social Group has with the European institutions. For us it is very important to publicise what Europe is for citizens with disabilities, and to convey to Europe the needs of the groups with the greatest difficulties. With our work we try to encourage people with disabilities to acquire the necessary skills to show all their abilities”, he concluded.
For her part, María Andrés pointed out some of the actions in which European institutions have been making progress towards the integration of the 87 million people with disabilities on the continent. “Giving a concrete response to the needs of people with disabilities is the best way to make Europe”, she stressed. He also spoke about the European Disability Strategy, highlighting the importance of ensuring the right to vote in the European elections to be held in a year’s time.
Finally, Raquel Nogal, the designer of the coupon, explained that she wanted it to reflect the diversity of European society “where everyone has a place”. She wanted to make visible those people who have greater difficulties in improving their skills and abilities.
Europe Day 2023: celebrating European unity |
Future of Europe
After the presentation of the poster with the design of the coupon, a round table was held to discuss the future of Europe. The first, ‘A year also for people with disabilities’, moderated by Cristina Barreto, Director of the Technical Office of European Affairs of the ONCE Social Group, was attended by Juan González Mellizo, Head of the Communication Department of the European Commission Representation Office in Spain; Consolación Rodríguez Alba, Technical Secretary General of the Spanish Ministry of Labour and Social Economy; Lourdes Márquez, Director of Alliances and International Relations of the ONCE Foundation; and Edith Viejo, a person with disabilities.
2023 is the European Year of Capabilities. The twin ecological and digital transition is creating new opportunities for people and the EU economy. Having the right skills enables people to successfully navigate changes in the labour market and participate fully in society and democracy.
More than three quarters of EU businesses report difficulties in finding workers with the necessary skills, and the latest Eurostat figures show that only 37% of adults receive regular training. The Digital Economy and Society Index shows that four in 10 adults and one in three working people in Europe lack basic digital skills.
With the European Year of Skills the Commission proposes to give a new impetus to lifelong learning by promoting greater, more effective and inclusive investment in training and skills upgrading; ensuring that skills are matched to labour market needs; matching people’s aspirations and skills with opportunities in the labour market, especially for the green and digital transition and economic recovery.
Europe Day, which takes place every 9 May, celebrates the peace and unity of the European continent. The date is the anniversary of the historic declaration by Robert Schuman, the French foreign minister who, in a speech in Paris in 1950, set out his idea of a new form of political cooperation in Europe that would make a new war between European nations unthinkable.
The European institutions are marking this day in the calendar with various activities, including this collaboration with ONCE to illustrate the coupon for 9 May with motifs that are important for the European Union.
The ONCE Daily Coupon offers a prize of 500,000 euros to the number plus the series, and 49 prizes of 35,000 euros to the five digits of the winning number.
