Following Spain’s activation of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism this weekend in response to the devastating floods in the country, France and Portugal immediately mobilised machinery and waste management vehicles to support operations in the affected areas.
Other European countries have also offered their assistance and the Commission is in permanent contact with the Spanish authorities to provide the necessary additional support.
To reinforce coordination on the ground, the EU’s Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC) has deployed a liaison officer to Spain. In addition, since 29 October, CEMR has been supporting Spain through the Copernicus rapid mapping service, with 31 maps for flood delineation and damage assessment.
Janez Lenarčič, Commissioner for Crisis Management, said: “We are determined to do all we can to help Spain. I would like to thank France and Portugal for their effective response to Spain’s request for urgent assistance following these devastating floods. Their support for waste management and reconstruction efforts, as well as offers of assistance from other Member States, demonstrate the strong solidarity within the EU and allow Spain to have the necessary resources for reconstruction“.
