The Commission has approved the inclusion of ‘Miel de Asturias’ in the Register of Protected Geographical Indications (PGI).
Miel de Asturias’ is a honey produced exclusively in Asturias, in the north of Spain, from plant species found in that region. It is characterised by an amber colour (ranging from light to very dark), a dense texture and very intense aromas and flavours. Today’s beekeepers continue to use ancestral practices – handed down through generations – to obtain unique honeys. The use of traditional methods, together with an in-depth knowledge of the local environment, allows beekeepers to obtain different varieties of high quality honeys.
This new designation adds to the more than 3 659 protected designations already listed in the eAmbrosia database. More information can be found on the quality policy pages.
