On 1 September, various stakeholders in the EU tourism ecosystem took an important step towards ensuring that online reviews and ratings of hotels and other types of tourist accommodation are reliable, by approving the “Code of Conduct for Online Reviews and Ratings for Tourist Accommodation”.
The new Code aims to achieve greater transparency and reliability of online reviews for consumers and businesses in the tourism sector. This initiative will help distinguish between genuine reviews from guests who have actually stayed at a place and those who have not, providing tourists with more information when booking their holidays.
Initiated by the EU, the Code of Conduct has been developed jointly by stakeholders in the tourism ecosystem, in particular accommodation providers and online platforms.
Apostolos Tzitzikostas, Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, said: “The reliability of online reviews is essential for confidence in tourism. With this new Code of Conduct, we are raising the bar across Europe, ensuring that only real guests can write reviews. This will give us clearer, fairer, more transparent and trustworthy information. It is good for travellers, good for tourist accommodation providers and a step forward for a more resilient tourism sector.”
