President Ursula von der Leyen will participate in the 4th UN Conference on Financing for Development, which takes place today, 30 June, in Seville.
The annual under-investment in the Sustainable Development Goals has been growing, and new approaches are needed to mobilise more financing. Together with its global partners, the European Union aims to lay the foundations for a new, fairer and more inclusive global financial system.
On the eve of the conference, President von der Leyen will participate in the Global Citizen NOW Summit. The “Scaling Up Renewables in Africa” campaign will be the focus of the discussions. Launched by President von der Leyen, together with Cyril Ramaphosa, President of South Africa and current G20 President, in partnership with the Global Citizen platform and with the support of the International Energy Agency, the campaign aims to mobilise commitments to scale up renewables across the African continent. That evening, the President will also attend a leaders’ dinner ahead of the UN Conference, hosted by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain.
President von der Leyen, together with the President of the European Council, António Costa, will participate in the first plenary meeting of the UN Conference on Financing for Development. This will be followed by a general debate in which the President will outline the European Union’s efforts to invest and innovate in financing for development. Her speech will be broadcast live on EBS at around 10.15 CEST.
Commissioners Wopke Hoekstra and Jozef Síkela will also attend the conference. Commissioner Hoekstra will participate in the round table on climate finance, co-organised by the European Commission. The event aims to scale up support to Least Developed Countries and Small Island Developing States in their efforts to build a climate neutral and resilient future for themselves. Both Commissioners will participate in a series of side events relevant to their respective portfolios.
President von der Leyen will also attend the ground-breaking for the construction of the new Joint Research Centre building. The building will be the first to fully implement the New European Bauhaus principles and the first EU institutional building of this scale to remove more carbon from the atmosphere than it produces. Commissioners Jessika Roswall and Ekaterina Zaharieva, together with representatives of the Spanish government, will take part in the event, which will be available to watch live.
